What you need to know about HAZWOPER Training
HAZWOPER is an abbreviation for “Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.” The standard was created by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and is designed to protect employees from exposure to hazardous waste, especially during or following accidental release.
So, who needs HAZWOPER Training? HAZWOPER training is essential for anyone who regularly works with or comes into contact with hazardous waste.
As a general rule, HAZWOPER training is necessary for employees in three specific fields:
- Uncontrolled hazardous waste site operations
- Treatment, storage, and disposal facility (TSDFs) management
- Emergency response.
However, keep in mind that the HAZWOPER goes further than just EPA regulated sites. The training is required for any workers who may be exposed to uncontrolled chemical hazards.
This includes employees that might be exposed to the following due to a spill or other type of release:
- High concentrations of poisonous substances
- Chemical conditions that pose a fire or explosion hazard
- Atmospheres at or above IDLH Levels
- Oxygen-deficient environments
Additionally, these requirements extend to the following individuals:
- Anyone that might lead evacuations in the event of chemical atmospheres or oxygen-deficient conditions
- Anyone supervising workers who are exposed to any of the above conditions
The ultimate goal of HAZWOPER training is to prepare individuals to effectively and safely stop, clean, or remediate hazardous waste releases.
Accordingly, OSHA requires that the training be specific to the hazards that your employees face.
That’s where UND Environmental Training comes in. Our HAZWOPER courses are designed by industry professionals to teach students the REAL information they need to keep themselves and others safe on the site.
How are our courses different? Some of the reasons include:
- Our instructors have been involved with a wide range of actual HAZMAT incidents, including many within the past year.
- Our facility specific trainings are tailored by your existing contingency Plans. These sessions include Homeland Security Exercise Evaluation Program (HSEEP) designed Tabletop Exercises. These exercises, satisfy annual EPA and Coast Guard FRP regulations.
- Our open enrollment courses are specific and include many hands-on activities.
- Site Worker and Emergency Response roles are covered.
- Our SCBA instructor has a technician level rating and real-world experience.
- We encourage our attendees to bring their equipment and plans for further experience in site specific operations.
This isn’t death by powerpoint….this is a full blown learning experience. We send your employees back to your facility with a thorough understanding of the rules and the techniques they need to response safely and efficiently.
