Description
This 2 day Initial Training Class fulfills training requirements for OSHA Class III work, for OSHA Competent Person for Classes III and IV, and AHERA O&M requirements.
Attendees will receive experience and practical instruction on asbestos maintenance activties, from start to finish. This class includes hands-on exercises. Safe work practices, record keeping, personal protective equipment, and small scale abatement procedures are examined in detail.
Operations and Maintenance training is designed for custodial and maintenance operations where asbestos-containing material (ACM) is likely to be disturbed.
Summary of applicable standards:
40 CFR Part 763.92 (EPA) requires local education agencies ensure, prior to the implementation of the O&M provisions of their management plan, that:
- All members of its maintenance and custodial staff who may work in the building which contains asbestos containing building materials (ACBM) receive awareness training of at least two hours, whether or not they are required to work with ACBM. New custodial and maintenance employees shall be trained within 60 days after commencement of their employment, and
- All maintenance and custodial staff who conduct any activities that will result in the disturbance of ACBM shall receive the above two hour training, plus an additional 14 hours.
OSHA 1926.1101 (Asbestos Construction Standard) requires employers, at no cost to the employees, institute training programs for all employees who are likely to be exposed in excess of a PEL (permissible exposure limit), and all employees who perform Class I through IV asbestos operations. Training shall be provided prior to or at the time of initial assignment and at least annually thereafter.
Class I – removal of thermal system insulation (TSI) and surfacing asbestos containing material (ACM) and presumed asbestos containing material (PACM.) Required training for Class I – Minimum 4 day EPA certified worker course.
Class II – removal of materials not TSI or surfacing, including, but not limited to, asbestos-containing wallboard, floor tile and sheeting, roofing and siding shingles, and construction mastics. Required training for Class II – Minimum of 8 hours, including hands-on.
Class III – repair and maintenance operations, where ACM, including TSI and surfacing ACM and PACM is likely to be disturbed. Required training for Class III – 16 hour, equivalent to AHERA O&M requirements.
Class IV – maintenance and custodial activities during which employee contact, but do not disturb, ACM or PACM , and activities to clean up dust, waste and debris resulting from Class I, II, and III Activities. Required training for Class IV – 2 hour minimum equivalent to AHERA O&M requirements.
